  • Managing “Burnt Toast”: Most sore throats last about a week. The best approach is simple self-care: regular painkillers (paracetamol/ibuprofen), plenty of fluids, and rest. Your local pharmacist can also suggest lozenges or sprays to soothe the pain.
  • Spotting a “Real Fire”: There are specific red flags that indicate a more serious problem. These include difficulty breathing, inability to swallow (leading to drooling), or a muffled “hot potato” voice.
  • Confidence to Manage: Knowing the difference gives you the confidence to manage safe symptoms at home, while knowing exactly when to pick up the phone.

When to Contact Us (Red Flags)

Please do not ignore the alarm if you experience any of the following red flag, “Real Fire”, symptoms:

  • Breathing: You are struggling to breathe.
  • Swallowing: You cannot swallow fluids or saliva, or you are drooling because you cannot swallow.
  • Voice Changes: Your voice sounds muffled, as if you have a hot potato in your mouth.
  • Fever: You have a very high temperature that does not come down with painkillers.
  • Worsening: You feel very unwell in yourself and are getting worse rather than better.
