Key Information

  • Seasonal Campaigns: The COVID-19 vaccination is offered in seasonal campaigns, usually in spring and early winter.
  • Eligibility: You will be offered the vaccine if you are at the highest risk of becoming seriously unwell.

Who is Eligible?

You may be offered a seasonal COVID-19 vaccine if you fall into one of the following groups:

  • You are aged 75 or over.
  • You are aged 6 months to 74 years and have a weakened immune system because of a health condition or treatment.
  • You live in a care home for older adults.

Note: The NHS will contact you if you are eligible. If you are unsure, you can check the latest NHS guidance or contact us.

Getting Your Vaccine

When the COVID-19 vaccine is available, there are a few ways you may be able to get it:

  • Book online (including using the NHS App).
  • Go to a walk-in vaccination site.
  • Arrange it at a local community pharmacy.

Preparing for Your Appointment

The appointment itself is usually quick. A clinician will ask a few simple questions to make sure the vaccine is right for you before giving you the injection in your upper arm.

Top Tips for the Day:

  • Clothing: Please wear a short-sleeved or loose-fitting top so we can easily get to your arm.
  • Allergies: If you have ever had an allergic reaction, please tell the vaccination team before you receive the vaccine.
  • When to Delay: If you have a high temperature, feel very unwell, or currently have COVID-19 on the day of your vaccination, please wait until you are feeling better before having it.

Other Vaccines and Doses

Most people only need one dose when the vaccine is available (though some with a severely weakened immune system may be advised to have an extra dose).

You may also be offered other vaccines at the same time. For example, during the winter campaign, it is perfectly safe to have the COVID-19 vaccine alongside the flu or pneumonia vaccine if you are eligible.

Managing Side Effects

It is common to have mild side effects, such as a sore arm, feeling tired, an ache, or a headache. These usually improve within a week. Resting and taking paracetamol can help.

When to Get Medical Help:

If you feel your side effects are getting worse or you are worried, please contact us through our online service or get advice from NHS 111.

When to Seek Urgent Help (999 or A&E)

Please call 999 or go to A&E immediately if you develop any of the following symptoms within a few days of your vaccine:

  • Chest pain.
  • Severe difficulty breathing.
  • A fast-beating, fluttering, or pounding heart (palpitations).
