Key Information:

  • More than just periods: Most people think menopause is just about hot flushes and periods stopping. However, oestrogen is crucial for your long-term health.
  • The Analogy: Think of oestrogen as a “Wi-Fi signal” for your whole body. It connects your brain, your bones, and your heart.
  • The Glitch: When you enter perimenopause, the “router” starts to glitch. The signals become weak and unstable.

The Brain: “Buffering”

  1. When the Wi-Fi signal drops in the brain, you experience “buffering.”
  • Symptoms: You might feel forgetful, struggle to concentrate, or feel mentally slower (brain fog).
  • Depression vs. Menopause: This can look like depression, but the cause is different.
    • Depression: Often a “software” issue.
    • Menopause: A “connection” issue.
  • Treatment: This is why antidepressants alone often do not work for menopausal mood changes. If you are on antidepressants and they are not helping, we may need to “reboot the router” with HRT.

The Bones: The “Maintenance Crew”

Without the oestrogen signal, the maintenance crew that repairs your bones stops working.

  • The Honeycomb Effect: Your bones can become weak and brittle, like a honeycomb with large holes (osteoporosis). You may also experience joint pain.
  • Silent Risk: You will not feel this happening until you break something.

The Heart: Blood Vessel Health

The signal keeps your blood vessels stretchy and flexible. When the signal fades, they can stiffen, increasing the risk of heart disease.

Assessing Your Risk

We treat menopause not just to stop symptoms (like hot flushes and headaches), but to protect your future health. When you come for a review, we assess these risks.

  • No Scans Needed: We look at your family history and lifestyle to see if you need protection for your bones and heart. You usually do not need extra scans for this.
