Key Information

  • Your vasectomy is not treated as successful straight away. Continue using contraception until The Adam Practice gives you the all clear.
  • Provide your sample no sooner than 12 weeks after the procedure and after at least 24 ejaculations.
  • Ideally, your last ejaculation should have been 2 to 7 days before you produce the sample.
  • The sample must be fresh because the laboratory needs to examine it within 50 minutes of it being produced.

When Should I Provide the Sample?

Your sample should be done no sooner than 12 weeks after your vasectomy.

Before producing the sample, you should have had at least 24 ejaculations. This helps to clear any remaining sperm from the system.

For the best sample, you should ideally have ejaculated 2 to 7 days beforehand.

Where Should I Produce and Take the Sample?

Your sample will be examined at Poole Hospital.

If you live nearby, you may be able to produce it at home and take it directly to the laboratory. It must be examined within 50 minutes of being produced.

If you live further away, you can produce the sample at the laboratory, where a private room is available.

How Do I Arrange the Sample?

You will need to contact the laboratory yourself at the number below to arrange the sample.

What Happens After the Sample?

Usually, only one sample is needed, but occasionally a repeat sample is required.

Once the sample has been processed, you will usually receive the result by email, together with information about what to do if there are any irregularities.

If you have not received your result within 4 weeks, please email The Adam Practice vasectomy team.

Keep using contraception until The Adam Practice gives you the all clear.

What Happens Next?

  • Wait until at least 12 weeks after your procedure and make sure you have had at least 24 ejaculations.
  • Contact the Poole Hospital laboratory yourself to arrange your sample.
  • Continue using contraception until The Adam Practice gives you the all clear.
  • Email The Adam Practice vasectomy team if you have not received your result within 4 weeks.
