Why Does the Flu Vaccine Change Each Year?

The flu virus is constantly changing, or mutating.

Last year’s vaccine trained your immune system to recognise the flu strains that circulated last winter. However, the strains expected this year may be different.

This means your immune system needs updated protection against the flu viruses likely to circulate this winter.

How Is the Flu Vaccine Updated?

Scientists around the world constantly track which flu strains are circulating.

Based on this information, a new vaccine is developed each year to match the strains predicted to be the most common. The jab offered each autumn is therefore an updated vaccine designed for the coming winter.

Why Do I Need Another Jab?
